Figuring out what to pack for a trip usually starts with the fun stuff. You remembered the cute dinner outfits. Your sunscreen is packed. You’ve downloaded *enough* books to get through the flight, the pool days, and a possible delay or two.
But every good packing list has a second half: the items that are significantly less exciting to pack and significantly *more* annoying to be without. As a travel advisor, I see the same handful of forgotten travel essentials trip after trip. Here are the six I never let my clients leave without.

Yes, Apple Pay is fabulous. No, I would not rely on it exclusively while traveling.
Phones die, terminals glitch, and some vendors abroad still don’t accept tap-to-pay. Bring at least one physical credit card, ideally a backup card too, plus a small amount of cash. Store the backup card separately from your main wallet so one lost bag or pickpocket doesn’t leave you stranded.
Save or print the details for your travel insurance policy, along with your regular health insurance information. Include the policy number and the claims or emergency contact numbers.
If something goes wrong, you don’t want to be digging through old emails on hotel Wi-Fi to find out who to call. Having this information in your carry-on and saved offline on your phone makes a stressful moment far easier to manage.
Your passport is important, but a backup copy becomes *very* important if the original suddenly disappears.
Keep copies of your passport, any visa or entry documents, your itinerary details, and your confirmations. Store one set digitally (saved offline, not just in your email) and keep a printed set in a separate bag from the originals. For international travel and cruises especially, this small step can save hours of headaches.

Don’t pack exactly seven pills for a seven-day trip and tempt the travel-delay gods!
Bring enough medication to cover your whole trip plus a little extra, and keep anything essential in your carry-on rather than your checked bag. If your luggage is delayed or your return flight is pushed back, you’ll be glad you planned for it.
A portable charger can go from “nice to have” to prized possession awfully quickly.
Your phone is your boarding pass, map, translator, camera, and payment backup all in one. A long travel day, a delayed connection, or a full day of sightseeing can drain it faster than you expect. A small power bank in your day bag is one of the best travel essentials you can pack.
Snap a quick photo of the bag *and* what’s inside before you leave for the airport.
If your luggage is lost or delayed, a clear photo makes it much easier to identify your bag, and a picture of the contents helps when you’re filling out a claim or dealing with travel insurance. It takes ten seconds and can save you a lot of frustration.
– Backup credit card and a small amount of cash
– Travel insurance and health insurance details (printed and saved offline)
– Copies of passport, visa or entry documents, itinerary, and confirmations
– Trip-length medication plus extra, packed in your carry-on
– Portable phone charger
– Photo of your luggage and its contents
The outfits and the sunscreen make the trip look good. These six essentials make it run smoothly, and a little prep before you leave is what lets you actually relax once you arrive.
