January 2027 might feel impossibly far away right now, but when it comes to the best January 2027 travel destinations, the good ones are already filling up. In the travel world, that’s closer than you think.

That’s travel advisor speak for: start thinking about booking it now.

This summer has been the season of last-minute bookings, and if there’s one thing I want for you, it’s to skip that particular brand of chaos. So let’s talk about why the best January 2027 travel destinations deserve a spot on your radar today — not in October, not in December, today.

If a winter getaway is even remotely on your mind, here’s why now is the time to start planning your 2027 winter vacation:

The best rooms go first. The good stuff won’t wait around while you and your partner ask each other, “Should we go somewhere in January?” for the ninth time.

Winter favorites are in higher demand than you’d expect. January may feel far off, but peak ski weeks, sunny winter escapes, and bucket-list experiences fill up surprisingly fast.

You have more options when you’re flexible. Booking early means more flight choices, more room categories, more itineraries — more chances to build the trip you actually want instead of settling for what’s left.

Having a trip on the calendar makes surviving January significantly easier. This is less of a travel fact and more of a public service announcement.

Every month, I pull together a few destinations that are especially well suited to that particular travel window, and I explain why the timing works so well. Here’s where I’d be looking for January 2027 travel destinations ↓

1. Iceland: A Top January 2027 Travel Destination for Northern Lights Seekers

Okay, hear me out: yes, the days are short during winter in Iceland, and no, this isn’t the trip you’ll need your swimsuit for. Wait — actually, yes it is, thanks to the geothermal lagoons. If seeing the Northern Lights is on your bucket list, January is one of the best times of year to go.

Perfect for: Adventurous couples, photographers, and travelers craving something a little otherworldly.

Don’t miss: A soak in the Blue Lagoon while snow falls around you, or a snowmobile tour if you’re after something more adventurous.

2. Belize: A Sunny Pick Among January 2027 Travel Destinations for Beach Lovers

If your relationship with winter is more “absolutely not” than “let’s embrace it,” allow me to introduce Belize. January lands right in the sweet spot — sunny skies, warm temperatures, and calm waters perfect for snorkeling the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Best part: you don’t have to choose between beach or jungle. Belize gives you both.

Perfect for: Travelers who want equal parts relaxation and adventure.

Don’t miss: Splitting your trip between the cayes and an inland jungle lodge. Beach and rainforest in one trip is hard to beat.

3. Zimbabwe: The Far-Flung Pick for a 2027 Winter Safari

Skip the snow and go on safari instead. January falls during Zimbabwe’s green season, which means lush landscapes, baby animals everywhere, and significantly fewer visitors than peak safari months. Yes, it’s called “green season” because of the rain — but if you have to sit out an afternoon thunderstorm, the safari lodge spa is not a bad place to do it.

Perfect for: Bucket-list travelers and anyone looking for a safari experience that feels a little more exclusive.

Don’t miss: Victoria Falls in full force. Rainy season means you get the most dramatic version of the falls.

4. Park City, Utah: A Close-to-Home January 2027 Ski Destination

Not everyone wants to escape winter. Some people suit up and run straight for it. For those people, January in Park City is hard to top. The mountains are fully open, snow conditions are fantastic, and whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or just here for the après-ski snacks, there’s plenty to keep everyone happy.

Perfect for: Families, couples, and groups looking for an elevated winter getaway with options for skiers and non-skiers alike.

Don’t miss: Ski-in/ski-out accommodations. The good ones disappear quickly for peak winter dates.

When Should You Book Your January 2027 Travel Destination?

Short answer: now. For peak winter travel — ski weeks, Northern Lights season, popular safari lodges — the best rooms, flights, and itineraries get locked in well over a year out. Booking early doesn’t just protect availability, it also gives you more flexibility to build the exact trip you want instead of settling for what’s left over.
