If you’re looking for river cruise tips for first-timers, you’re in the right place. River cruising is one of the most beautiful ways to travel — unhurried, intimate, and immersive in a way that a flight into a major city simply can’t replicate. You wake up in one city, sip your morning coffee as the landscape drifts past, and step off the ship into a centuries-old village by noon.
But river cruises are also a completely different experience from ocean cruising — and if you’ve never sailed one before, there are a few things that will help you choose the right itinerary, the right ship, and the right trip for you.
Here’s what I tell every client before we start planning.
River cruise ships typically carry between 100 and 190 passengers. Compare that to a large ocean ship carrying 4,000 and you immediately understand why the experience feels so different. Meals are unhurried. Staff know your name by day two. There’s no waiting in lines, no crowds, no “lost at sea” feeling.
The small scale is a feature, not a limitation. For families traveling together, couples celebrating a milestone, or anyone who values depth over spectacle, it’s exactly the right environment.
One of the things my clients love most about river cruising is how genuinely all-inclusive most lines are. On many ships, your fare covers shore excursions, wine and beer with dinner, gratuities, and even Wi-Fi. You step off the ship knowing exactly what you’ve spent.
That said, inclusions vary by cruise line, so this is worth asking about before you book. I always walk my clients through what’s covered so there are no surprises onboard.
On an ocean cruise, the ship is often the destination. On a river cruise, the itinerary is everything. You’re waking up each morning in a different city — Bruges, Cologne, Budapest, Avignon — and spending real time in each place, not just a few rushed hours.
This means the river and the route matter. The Danube and the Rhine offer very different scenery, culture, and pace. A Douro Valley cruise through Portugal’s wine country feels entirely unlike sailing through Amsterdam’s canals. Choosing the right river for what you want to feel is where the planning begins.

This one surprises first-timers: river cruises are subject to water levels in a way ocean cruises are not. In drought years, low water can prevent ships from passing under certain bridges or navigating shallow stretches. In high-water years, the opposite can occur.
Reputable cruise lines handle this gracefully — rerouting, substituting coach transportation between cities, or adjusting itineraries to deliver a comparable experience. It’s worth knowing upfront so it doesn’t feel like a disruption if it happens. Travel protection is also something I always recommend for river cruises for exactly this reason.
Not all river cruise lines are created equal. Some are built for active travelers who want hiking and cycling options in every port. Others lean into culinary experiences, local wine pairings, and immersive cultural programming. Some are a better fit for multigenerational families; others cater almost exclusively to couples.
Matching you to the right line — Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck, Uniworld — is one of the most valuable things I do as your advisor. It’s not about which one has the best marketing. It’s about which one was designed for the way you travel.
Ready to plan your first river cruise?
River cruising is one of my favorite trip types to design — and there is nothing quite like watching a client’s face light up when they realize they’re waking up in the French countryside with a glass of wine already poured.
These river cruise tips for first-timers are just the starting point — I’d love to help you find the right itinerary for your trip.
